IPL vs. Excel V+: How Do They Differ for Redness and Pigmentation?

Close-up of facial redness and visible blood vessels associated with rosacea and pigmentation concerns.

Redness, visible vessels, freckles, and brown spots can appear in the same area, but they do not all come from the same source. In Rutherford and Verona, New Jersey, our team at Geria Dermatology evaluates what is causing the color before recommending IPL or the Cutera Excel V+ laser.

IPL Uses Broad-Spectrum Pulsed Light

IPL is often grouped with laser procedures, but it is technically a light-based treatment rather than a laser. It delivers multiple wavelengths of pulsed light that can be absorbed by pigment such as melanin and hemoglobin. This allows IPL to address both brown and red discoloration.

With IPL, we can treat sun spots, freckles, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, broken capillaries, and small vascular lesions.

Excel V+ Uses Two Laser Wavelengths

Excel V+ uses 532 nm and 1064 nm laser wavelengths. The 532 nm wavelength is used for more superficial vascular concerns, including facial redness, rosacea, and spider veins, while the 1064 nm wavelength can reach deeper vascular lesions.

It can also be used for certain brown and red spots. Our providers choose settings according to the type and depth of the issue rather than treating every area the same way.

What If You Have Rosacea or Sun Damage?

A brown sun spot and a tiny visible blood vessel may sit close together on your face, yet respond to different technology. Rosacea can also appear as flushing, persistent redness, or visible vessels, so identifying what you are seeing matters before treatment begins.

Our rosacea treatment page includes Excel V+ as an option for vascular redness, while IPL can also be used for rosacea and small visible vessels. When freckles, sun damage, or hyperpigmentation are the main issue, IPL may be considered as well. Our Treatments by Concern page separates hyperpigmentation from redness and rosacea.

How Do We Decide Which Technology to Use?

Before recommending either option, we look at what is creating the visible color. Diffuse redness, isolated vessels, freckles, and sun spots are different findings, even when they appear in the same area. We also offer several laser treatment options, so the recommendation can be based on your skin rather than the device name you recognize first.

Some patients have both vascular redness and pigmentation. A single device may not address each issue in exactly the same way, which is why an in-person evaluation can be useful.
