What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that appears as red patches on your nose and cheeks that may also spread to your forehead or chin. Although a newly developed tendency to blush or flush more easily than before is often the first sign of rosacea, some people with the condition may also notice that it makes their ears, chest, or back red, too.

Because the condition is noticeable, long-lasting, and sometimes painful, it can affect your overall quality of life. Frustration, embarrassment, and low self-esteem are just a few of the issues brought on by living with severe rosacea.

What causes Rosacea?

Its exact causes remain mysterious, but medical researchers believe that genetics and immune system function may both play a role, along with specific environmental factors that may trigger or worsen the condition, including:

  • Intense exercise
  • Emotional stress
  • Sunlight, wind, and temperature extremes
  • Hot drinks, spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol
  • Certain cosmetics and medications
  • Menopause

Although anyone can develop rosacea, it’s most common among fair-skinned women between the ages of 30 and 60. Because rosacea is sometimes mistaken for eczema or allergies, proper treatment requires an accurate diagnosis.

What are common Rosacea treatments?

There are three types of rosacea; it’s possible to have more than one type, and each type requires a different treatment plan.

  • Erythematous rosacea – This condition involves easy flushing of the skin, which is often brought on by hot foods or drinks, alcohol, caffeine, exercising in the heat, or sun exposure. The best way to treat mild rosacea is by avoiding known triggers. If the redness becomes persistent, laser photorejuvenation treatments that target the blood vessels in your skin are often helpful. Using a green-tinted moisturizer may also help mask the redness.
  • Papulopustular rosacea – Moderate rosacea, also known as papulopustular rosacea, is characterized by persistent redness. Small, red, pus-filled bumps may also appear. Treatments for this type of rosacea include topical creams, lotions, gels, and washes, as well as oral antibiotics, which can reduce surface bacteria and decrease inflammation.
  • Phymatous rosacea – With the most advanced type of rosacea, your oil glands enlarge, causing a bulbous, red nose and puffy cheeks. Surgery is often the best treatment option for this type of rosacea.
  • Ocular rosacea – Often found in adults affected by rosacea between the ages of 30 and 50, it is inflammation that causes redness, burning, and itching of the eyes. Unfortunately, there is currently no cure for ocular rosacea, but our team can get you on some medications to help control the signs and symptoms, as well as teach you how to maintain a good eye care routine.

Treatment options for Rosacea

  • Laser Genesis – This treatment works by gently heating just below the skin’s surface to stimulate collagen production, but can also constrict the blood vessels which can help reduce facial redness and rosacea. The handheld device is moved over the treatment area in a painless guided motion. The results of this treatment can last for about six to 12 months for most patients, or longer if patients maintain their results well.
  • Cutera Excel V – Excel V can help reduce the redness and inflammation associated with the condition. This gentle form of laser therapy targets the blood vessels that are causing the redness, preventing them from getting any bigger and resulting in a more even skin tone. This is the perfect choice for those men and women who have a mild form of rosacea, without any other imperfections or visible signs of aging.
  • Topical – Some patients with mild rosacea are able to treat their condition with a topical medication to reduce the appearance of redness. This is not a permanent solution, but if used daily, most users should be able to see relief from reddened skin for about 12 hours.

Rosacea treatment recovery

Your recovery phase also depends on the kind of therapy you receive. It is common for our patients to be prescribed a maintenance skin care regimen, which will include advice on how to avoid rosacea triggers and come in for follow-ups when necessary.

The length of your treatment depends on your skin’s response to it. Patients who improve after several weeks are kept on the same regimen for six months. If that doesn’t happen, you may be recommended to combine medications or surgical therapy.

For those who undergo laser treatment, recovery can take 1-3 days, depending on the procedure and your health status. If you experience any long-lasting or unnecessary side-effects, you will need to seek medical help right away from either our team or your healthcare provider.

Once the treated skin heals, you will observe continuous improvement for several months and up to a year due to enhanced collagen production and remodeling. You must avoid relapse triggers and take good care of your skin to ensure excellent, long-lasting results.
