Dermal fillers are often used for treating deep-set facial wrinkles, and they can also add volume to hollow areas such as the cheeks, around the mouth area, temples, and under the eyes, all of which are common effects of aging.
Sun damage can also increase the likelihood of wrinkles appearing, and then, of course, genetics can also cause some people to find more loose facial skin than others.
The three different types of dermal fillers that are more commonly used:
HA fillers are the most popular option since they are designed to bind water molecules to add volume beneath the skin. They’re regularly used to plump lips, smooth wrinkles, and folds, and remove scars, with their effects lasting between four and six months.
Dermal fillers made from poly-L-lactic acid tend to be used to correct nasolabial folds, the smile lines at each side of the mouth, and other facial wrinkles. These types of fillers help to stimulate collagen production to create a fuller, younger-looking appearance.
Calcium hydroxylapatite (CaHA) is one of the most well-studied dermal fillers worldwide and is used to correct moderate-to-severe facial lines and folds and to replenish lost volume. It uses a naturally occurring mineral form of calcium apatite and is biodegradable and will be reabsorbed naturally by your metabolic process.
With a number of fillers now available, we can diminish signs of aging that appear on the face, lips, and hands. Fillers can effectively:
Our patients who have received dermal fillers in New Jersey were able to enjoy the following benefits from their treatments:
A candidate for dermal fillers is anyone who is concerned about aging, volume loss, smile lines, bags and dark circles under their eyes, and has realistic expectations. In addition, patients with moderate or harsh wrinkles are excellent candidates for dermal fillers as well.
It is best to consult with a board certified dermatologist at Geria Dermatology to ensure the treatment plan is tailored to each patient’s specific goals and needs.
Active infections on or near the injection sites must be fully treated before undergoing a dermal filler treatment. To learn more about possible hypersensitivity to the product, it is best to schedule a consultation.
Your first step in getting dermal filler in New Jersey is to contact our office and schedule a consultation. During this consultation, you will have the opportunity to meet with one of our expert providers, who will carefully examine your skin and discuss your medical history. You should keep an open and honest dialogue with your provider because it is essential to ensure your safety and minimize any potential risks or side effects. Your provider will take the time to address all of your questions and concerns, ensuring that you feel informed and confident in your decisions.
After gathering all the necessary information, your provider will create your personalized treatment plan to meet your aesthetic needs. If you are satisfied with this plan, you can proceed with receiving your dermal filler treatment on the same day, or if you prefer, our Patient Coordinator can help you reschedule for a more convenient time in your schedule.
When it’s time for your dermal filler treatment, it will be performed at our clinic and is very quick. We will first have you get comfortable in our reclining chair, and then apply either a cold compress to the treatment area, or apply a topical anesthetic cream. Although dermal fillers aren’t “painful”, these little additions help you have a more comfortable experience.
Using a fine needle, our dermatologist will carefully and strategically inject the dermal filler into the predetermined treatment areas, using her expertise and artistic eye to ensure precise placement and achieve natural-looking results. Throughout the injection process, your provider may massage the treated area to ensure the even distribution of the filler.
After the injections, your provider will assess the results and make any necessary touch-ups to ensure symmetry and balance. This may involve additional injections or adjustments to achieve the desired outcome.
The entire procedure typically takes between 10 to 30 minutes but will vary depending on the location(s) of the injection and the filler you’re receiving.
After your treatment, you can expect some swelling, redness, and bruising after the procedure, but these side effects are usually mild and go away within a few days. You can resume your normal activities immediately after the treatment, but your provider and injector may advise you to avoid strenuous exercise and exposure to sunlight for a week. We will also give you specific aftercare instructions to help you achieve the best results moving forward.
Restylane – Restylane is a hyaluronic-acid-based injectable and is more of a generalized filler, meaning it can be used for a variety of purposes. It can smooth away facial wrinkles, plump the lips, and restore facial contours.
Lyft – Lyft is a filler in the Restylane range of products. It’s recommended for people with age-related volume loss in the backs of the hands, the cheeks, and other parts of the midface.
Defyne – Restylane Defyne is an effective treatment for deeper wrinkles around the mouth and nose. It is also specialized for the correction of a mildly or moderately recessed chin.
Refyne – Restylane Refyne is a recommended filler product for treating softer nasolabial folds and marionette lines. It is designed to move well with your tissues for very natural results.
Silk – Restylane Silk was the first lip augmentation filler approved by the Food & Drug Administration. It is also an ideal treatment for perioral lip lines, also called lipstick lines or smoker’s lines.
Juvederm – Juvederm, similar to Restylane, is another hyaluronic acid-based generalized dermal filler meant for improving signs of aging, restoring facial contours, and augmenting the lips. It was approved by the FDA in 2006.
Voluma – Juvederm Voluma is a filler from Allergan’s VyCross range of products. As part of the aging process, the cheeks often become gaunt and hollow. This dense gel is specifically designed to restore volume to gaunt cheeks.
Vollure – Juvederm Vollure, another volume filler from Allergan’s VyCross line, is less dense than Voluma. It can be placed deeply or superficially depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals. It is often used for treating harsh age lines like the nasolabial folds.
Volbella – Juvederm Volbella is a popular lip filler used to restore shape and volume to thin lips, creating an appealing pout. This lip-enhancing dermal filler can also smooth away perioral lip lines.
Juvederm XC – Similar to Restylane-L and Restylane, Juvederm XC addresses the same issues as basic Juvederm but also contains lidocaine for numbing.
Belotero – Belotero is an injectable HA filler that reduces the appearance of moderate and deep facial folds and wrinkles like parentheses lines, marionette lines, and nasolabial folds. This gel filler is made using a Cohesive Polydensified Matrix (CPM), which allows it to be very smooth and flexible.
Radiesse – Radiesse is a dermal filler used to restore volume to hollow regions of the face like the temples and jawline, smooth away age lines, and rejuvenate the backs of the hands. It is composed of CaHA (calcium hydroxylapatite) microspheres suspended in a carboxymethylcellulose gel solution. The microspheres create immediate structure in the skin tissues, and new tissues grow between them for improved volume.
Each dermal filler product is based on a variety of products. Some are based on hyaluronic acid, while others are based on calcium hydroxylapatite. Before a dermal filler brand can be recommended to you, it will be necessary to discuss your appearance goals during a consultation.
The types of age lines and wrinkles present will be identified during the consultation. You will also be asked about your complete medical history to ensure that the treatment will be effective and safe for your overall health.
We will then give you an overview of the treatment plan process and provide special instructions to help you prepare for your appointment.
